Take a Deep Dive Into the Lagoon through Literacy – A Moonshot Community in ActionOn May 11, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. families can take a Deep Dive Into the Lagoon through Literacy during a free, event at the Indian River County Main Library. The Moonshot Community Action Network (MCAN) brings together literacy, the arts, and environmental stewardship to shine a spotlight on the importance of literacy and the unique vibrancy of the community.Immerse yourself in lagoon literacy with local environmental organizations during an afternoon of interactive, hands-on activities promoting the preservation of the Indian River Lagoon.Fun, environmental education literacy activities will feature Mermaid Meg and the Magic Lagoon a book written by local author, Leslie Maloney. Additional activities include story time, prizes, photos with the East Coast Florida Mermaid and more.Attendees are also invited to grab a paintbrush and apply their artistic talents to the Moonshot Mural. Artist Pam Sommers designed the collaborative arts literacy project using artwork created by children attending Moonshot afterschool programs.“This event will highlight our community’s passion for literacy, arts, the lagoon and how each intrinsically intertwines,” says Missy Weiss, S.E.A a Difference, Inc Executive Director. “By providing opportunities like the ‘Deep Dive into the Lagoon Through Literacy’ event, we are providing participants the opportunity to not only learn about the lagoon through the application of literacy and art but also instill a sense of environmental stewardship and community action.”“We know it’s critical to get students connected to their community and provide authentic opportunities for them to apply their learning,” says Debbi Arseneaux, The Learning Alliance educational consultant and teaching artist. “This is how we get them reading and give them a reason to continue developing literacy skills.”The event will help to showcase the work of community partners aligned with the Moonshot Moment goal of 90 percent literacy by third grade and highlight the many ways we can care for our local ecosystem.“This collaborative effort will be a powerful example of how we can spark our community into action,” adds Arseneaux.
