HISTORY OF THE CURRENT MAIN LIBRARY
In 1985 a bequest to the library by the Julian W. Lowenstein family was made asking that funds be used to help construct a new library building. The Florida History & Genealogy Dept. was named in honor of Julian W. Lowenstein. The Main Library opened 1 Feb 1991. By 1998-99, the library annual statistics showed great use by the community & the county commissioners approved funds for the expansion of the children's, reference & genealogy departments. The Genealogy department continued to grow in size & by 2002 it was approximately 4000 square feet. During 2005 Florida was hit by 2 hurricanes. At which time many donations were received from families and from the Indian River Historical Society in order to preserve photographs and documents of local history. Based on the addition of these materials, the dept. changed it's name to the Archive Center & Genealogy Department. Though there have been many changes to the Archive Center & Genealogy Dept. one thing has remained the same; Julian W. Lowenstein is remembered because of his family's generosity.
VOLUNTEERS The Archive Center & Genealogy Department depends greatly on the support of the community as well as the volunteers that work many hours per week assisting patrons and working on special projects such as indexing and preserving the materials being researched or that have been donated. We would like to recognize them for their dedication.
