HISTORY OF THE CURRENT MAIN LIBRARY

A bequest to the library by the Julian W. Lowenstein family in 1985 asked that the funds be used to help construct a new library building. The Florida History & Genealogy Department was named in honor of Julian W. Lowenstein. The Main Library opened 1 Feb 1991. By 1998-99, the library annual statistics showed great use by the community and the county commissioners approved funds for the expansion of the children's, reference and genealogy departments. The Genealogy department continued to grow in size and by 2002 it was approximately 4000 square feet. During 2005 Florida was hit by two hurricanes prompting many families and the Indian River Historical Society to donate all their photographs and documents to the library for preservation. Based on the addition of these materials, the name Florida History & Genealogy Department was changed to the Archive Center & Genealogy Department. Though there have been many changes to the Archive Center & Genealogy Department one thing remains the same; Julian W. Lowenstein is remembered because of his family's generosity.

VOLUNTEERS

The Archive Center & Genealogy Department depends greatly on the support of the community as well as the volunteers that work many hours per week assisting patrons and working on special projects such as indexing and preserving the materials being researched or that have been donated. We would like to recognize them for their dedication.
