Some of us bookworms at the library would like to share our picks with you for the most interesting, popular and essential books and authors in our collection. We also might highlight an author we think deserves a little more attention from readers.

We're big fans of series here at the library and of books that have been made into TV shows and movies. So if you like the book be sure to keep an eye out for the movie (or if you like the show, read the book!)

It's safe to say that The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is one of the funniest science fiction novels ever written. Adams spoofs many core science fiction tropes: space travel, aliens, interstellar war--stripping away all sense of wonder and repainting them as commonplace, even silly.

The entire 5 book Hitchhiker series is contained within the Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Remember to bring your towel.

"Irresistable!" --The Boston Globe

"A Whimsical Odyssey...Characters frolic through the galaxy with infectious joy." --Publishers Weekly

As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R. R. Martin's stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction. It's also a new original TV series on HBO.

"Grabs hold and won't let go. It's brilliant." --Robert Jordan

"Reminiscent of T. H. White's The Once and Future King, this novel is an absorbing combination of the mythic, the sweepingly historical, and the intensely personal." --Chicago Sun-Times

Dexter Morgan is not your average serial killer. He enjoys his day job as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Police Department . . . but he lives for his nighttime hobby of hunting other killers. Dexter is therefore not pleased to discover that someone is shadowing him, observing him, and copying his methods. Dexter is not one to tolerate displeasure . . . in fact, he has a knack for extricating himself from trouble in his own pleasurable way.

“Like a breath of fresh air blowing across all crime-novel conventions, there is Dexter.” --Time

"A macabre work of art." --The Miami Herald

Young Adult Sensation - The Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games," a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed.

"A plot-driven blend of suspense, science fiction, and romance." -- USA Today

"[The Hunger Games] is a great book, and very thought-provoking. Read this along with your teen and discuss it." -- Charlaine Harris
