AT THE INDIAN RIVER COUNTY MAIN LIBRARY
ARCHIVE CENTER & GENEALOGY DEPARTMENT

  • When you visit our department, please sign in. We keep track of who visits us and what kind of materials are being used. This also helps us to purchase new materials and support future budgets.

  • It is not necessary to have a library card or to be a resident of the county to use our collection.

  • Signs are posted throughout the department to help guide you through the collection. Please read them. They are there to help you.

  • None of the genealogical materials are permitted to circulate outside the library.

  • Do not re-shelve books, microfilm, or microfiche. This is for your benefit as well as others. All used materials must be counted for statistical data compiled by the state library.

  • You will be expected to do your own research. Staff will help provide the materials and will guide you on items unfamiliar to you.

  • The library uses the Dewey Decimal system. Follow these simple guidelines:

      • 000-099 - GENERALITIES

      • 100-199 - PHILOSOPHY AND PSYCHOLOGY


      • When primitive humans learned to think, their first thoughts were about themselves and the people around them.
         
      • 200-299 - RELIGION


      • They attributed the things they could not understand to a Supreme Being and religion began.
         
      • 300-399 - SOCIAL SCIENCE


      • Families became groups and groups became communites. It was necessary to live in harmony with others.
         
      • 400-499 - LANGUAGE


      • People had to communicate with each other and invented speech.
         
      • 500-599 - NATURAL SCIENCES AND MATHEMATICS


      • As they developed, humans began to wonder about the world around them.
         
      • 600-699 - TECHNOLOGY AND APPLIED SCIENCE


      • They made life easier for themselves when they put to use some of the knowledge they acquired.
         
      • 700-799 - ARTS


      • They now found time for recreation, painting, and music.
         
      • 800-899 - LITERATURE AND RHETORIC


      • In order that others might profit from their experiences, they put them in writing.
         
      • 900-999 - GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY


      • And left behind a record of the achievements.

 

  • REMEMBER: The most effective use of the library is using the computerized card catalog. [CATALOG]


DONATION POLICY

Once a donated book is accepted and accessioned by the library, it becomes the property of the Indian River County Main Library. Books are never removed from the collection except for repair or replacement.

If the book is a duplicate, we offer them to the local society for exchange with other libraries and societies throughout the country.

Donations are very much appreciated and are tax deductible. A donation letter is sent to everyone who contributes, but the value of the donation is determined by the donor.
