The Friends' Story |
When the County assumed responsibility for the library's operation from the City, the members of the Indian River County Library Association became the force behind a new organization. The Friends of the Vero Beach Public Library was established in October, 1986 to serve three functions for the library: raise money for special needs; lobby the government; and volunteer time.
Library services the Friends wished to provide were: help finance the
computer system to network throughout the world; expand the selection of books; update the
periodicals; furnish materials for the sight impaired; and sponsor children's programs,
lecture series, and exhibits.
Through their efforts and accomplishments, the Friends received the Council for Florida Libraries 1988 Public Awareness Award which recognized its valuable contribution in promoting libraries and reading in Florida.
The Friends of the Vero Beach Public Library became a member of the Friends of the Libraries U.S.A.
