WHERE DID ROSELAND GET ITS NAME Post Office Application 1891 Dec 2 Legend #1 It was named after a Dr. David ROSE who treated patients many years ago in Sebastian. FACT: He did not arrive in Florida until after 1900 and he entered the United States from Canada in 1892 and settled in Chicago. His daughter Edith was born in Canada in 1893. Legend #2 According to Aunt Katy Cain White, early in 1892, Will Underwood and one of the Mallory brothers met with Cain on his front porch to make out the application and decide on a name. A beautiful pink rambler rose bush covered one end of the porch and half the side of the house. The rose was called The Seven Sisters. There were seven Cain sisters and this coincidence occurred to their father. He proposed the name Roseland and it has been Roseland ever since. [Press Journal, Pioneer Chit Chat by Thompson] FACT: In the 1900 census, Will P Underwood was living next door to Dempsey Cain and a daughter of WP Underwood was born 1890 Florida. There were SEVEN Cain sisters. This is the most likely scenario. Legend #3 Mr. Kane was asked what he thought the town should be named and he was standing by the front door. There was a rose bush right outside his door and he answered, “Roseland.” [Press Journal, Nov 9, 1996, page C1] FACT: No Kane family can be found on the early censuses and this is more than likely the “simplified” version. The name was actually Cain.
